What is Fly My Damsel?

Fly My Damsel lingerie is designed in Finland, and made in Nepal according to Fair Trade principles. Along with making beautiful and feminine, well-fitting and comfortable lingerie, Fly My Damsel wants to be something more. Named after a damselfly, a small and shining creature reflecting the sunbeams along the riversides, Fly My Damsel has a vision to bring light, to inspire, and to encourage to spread your own wings. It can mean everyday joy received from beautiful clothes; greater independence and self-confidence from professional skills for the Nepalese women who make our lingerie; or a realisation that a better world is worth fighting for.

Flying can seem to be impossible to humans. Also great dreams of a more fair world can feel like they are too big to realise. Fly My Damsel wants to work for making great dreams to come true one step at the time, and be a part of changing fashion industry to a more sustainable one both ecologically and ethically. Buying our lingerie makes you a part of that dream.

Fly My Damsel
There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask "What if I fall?"
Oh but my darling,
What if you fly?

Fair Production

We believe that no compromise is needed between beauty and justice, and there's no need to suffer for beauty – at least not for those who make our clothes. Fly My Damsel wants to improve standard of living of those least well-off, and therefore manufactures its products in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world. Our manufacturer Sujha Traders & Exporters belongs to Fair Trade Group Nepal, a member of World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO), and it works according to WFTO fair trade principles. Sujha Traders employs espacially former kamlaris, women who have been freed from an illegal system of bonded labour. A job as a tailor gives them a new start, independence, and a reasonable standard of living. Read more about the work of Sujha Traders here. Many of the women making our garments already have good professional skills and many years' experience of making clothes.

Sustainable materials

The main material in Fly My Damsel lingerie is 100% lyocell, a fiber made of wood pulp. Lyocell is produced with a closed loop method, which means that the chemicals and water used for making pulp into fiber are all collected and reused, and the process causes practically no pollution. Textile and garment industries are the second most polluting industry in the world after the oil industry, and we want to do our part to decrease that harmful impact. Apart from being ecologically sound, lyocell is also durable, soft – it resembles cotton – breathable, and naturally antibacterial. This makes it an ideal material for undergarments. Lyocell is also biodegradable, thus leaving to waste to the nature when the garment is disposed of. Also cutting waste from our factory is recycled.

We want to make lingerie which is beautiful, well-fitting, comfortable, and durable. Good fit and support require also less natural materials, such as paddings and elastics made of polyesther and elasthane (lycra). We also want to offer a fairly produced range of those lovely lace pieces that are loved by so many women. Our laces are mostly made of polyamide. We seek to find recycled or other more natural alternatives for these artificial fibres when possible.

Bra underwires are reusable, because the metal wire lasts much longer than the textile parts of the bra. When your Fly My Damsel bra finally wears out, you can mail their underwires to us. We will use them for new bras, and as a thank-you we will send you a discount code to our web store.
